Post a comment in which you journal (50 to 100 words) on the following topic:

In what ways is the short story "The Contents of the Dead Man's Pocket" an example of what the class has been discussing regarding the concept of the "good life"? Does The main character seem to follow the "good life" as described by Socrates or by Philebus?
  • see handout "Inquiry on the Good Life"
  • How do you know?

No i think he is going to think that it was not worth it.They gave him his raise but he died.He did not even enjoy it at all.So it was not even worth ignoring his wife.So his wife was suffering her husband ignoring her and also his death later.

Philebus saysthat the good life is enjoyment, pleasure, and delight however the main character is folowing what philebus thinks and he is worrying about participating and ignoring his wife and thiking about the good life as pleasures.

This story was an example of what we have been discussing in class in that the main character in the story seems to follow, for the most part, how Socrates felt what the good life is. The whole story is about how he risks his life so that he can present an idea to his authorities to move forward in his career. He worked so hard on the piece of paper and appreciated its value enough to walk alongside a building eleven stories from the ground.
I do think he should have thought about his wife, and asked himself if he would die over his career, or her.

I think Philebus really is saying that the good life has to deal with enjoyment, pleasure, delight. The good life is for all people in the world wheither born or not.The story is for all beings in the world. It's sort of what a lot of things have to do with the good life. Because the good life isn't just what you want it's right what you have and thats what you learn from life. You learn the good things and have to accept what you have to recieve more.
