Lessons We have Learned
History is littered with events that when seen from our vantage point of the future could be taken as lessons, sometimes even warnings, of our own pride, weaknesses, and ability to make the same mistakes over and over again. It would seem that, given such a great classroom as history, we would be able to progress and grow as a society. The only problem is, sometimes we forget; and as the man said, "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it."
You and your group will research one of the following topics and present the information that you find in a comment to this post. Your comment will do three things:
1. Report on the original historic event (what happened) in 50 to 100 words.
2. State the lesson that should have been learned from that event in 20 to 40 words.
3. State whether or not we have learned the lessons from this event that we should have. Give examples to support your position. Be sure to add quotes and citations to your comment from each of the online resources that you use.The following links will help you to format your quotes and citations:

1. The reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire, was thought to be the introduction of Christianity. The money needed to maintain the empire was instead used to build churches all around Rome. Other problems included;Decline in morals, Public heath issues, Political Corruption, Unemployment, Inflation, Urban Decay, Inferior Technology, and Increased Military spending.
2. People and the government should be more organized, and look into the future more, and think about the aftermath more then the present.
3. No, we have not, after the fall of the Roman empire, there was the fall of the British Empire. "Wood argues that, because of the thin, sporadic, and often contradictory nature of the surviving written records from this period, scholars should give up pursuing the chimera of a positivist chronological narrative" In other words even some scholars don't exactly know how the empire fell, or even who started it. How are we suppose to learn from our mistakes, if not everyone knows what went wrong?

1.World War 1 was a war that everybody was envolved in. The war started in 1914 and ended in 1918.
European conflict with Germany declared war against Russia on August 1. This war was the first world war and was supose to be the last war, but it wasnt. It continued with wORLD wAR 2.The people that that World War 1 will end all wars, but there were many after.
2.There were many lessons that were learned from World War 1. One of the lessons learned was fighting never helps anything. It just causes more problems, as you can see there are many more wars happing today.
3.No, we didnt learn are lesson that fighting doesnt help anything, because there are still wars today. We should all learn how to get along and not fight because fighting just causes more problems. So no we didnt learn are lesson.

1)In the 1950's the US began to send troops to Vietnam. Throughout 25 years of battling 2.5 million died on both sides. Around 1955 and 1960 North Vietnamese with help of Southern Communist "Vietcong" tried to take the government in the South Vietnam. November 1963 President Diem was overthrown. After awhile North Vietnamese tried to conquer the country with assistance of China and Russia The US got more scared of the progress of Ho Chi Minh and the Vietcong. Communism was the "evil menace in the us". The Soviet rule was into Eastern Europe, Korea, and Cuba.
2)The lesson from this event should have taught the US that it was a waste of 25 years. The reason for this is because 2.5 million people died for no reason of this action.
3)We have not learned the lesson from this event. Due to right after the Vietnam War we have experianced many others. Still till this day we are at war.

1.The Civil Rights movement of the 1960s was the most important act of african-americans after the civil war.All African-Americans were being discriminated agaisnt and were not being treated the equal rights they should have. The Civil Rights Movement bigeest leader was Martin Luther King Jr. He understood the boycott and protested,"I have a dream that one day the state of Alabama, whose governor's lips are presently dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, will be transformed into a situation where little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sisters and brothers. I have a dream today".African-Americans made organizations such as NAACP,SCLC,and SNCC fighting for their freedom.
2.The lesson that all americans should have learned is to treat every person the same, no matter what color or gender. The African-Americans fought in the 1960's for their freedom and their rights and they deserved it.
3.We belive that our country learned the lesson from the Civil rights movement, now we are all united as one and treat everyone the same despite their color.Discrimination is now a crime. Now everyone can sit on any place on the bus that they want. African--Americans are aloud to speek their opinion and be involoved in our government and voting.
Slavery started in 1619. Slavery started in Jamestown."Although the number of African American slaves grew slowly at first, by the 1680's they had become essential to the economy of Virginia." Abraham Lincoln outlawed slavery when he created the Emancipation Proclomation. This freed over four million slaves and turned the civil war into a war of liberation.
Slavery should of taught us to treat everyone equal and to not be racist. Slavery should have also taught us that if we want respect we should treat everyone with respect.
We learned our lesson because there isnt slavery anymore. We also did not learn our lesson because there is still racism.
On Jan 30,1933 Adolf Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany. On March 12,1938 Adolf Hitler orders the german army into Austria. In March 15,1939 the german army invades Czechoslovakia. In aug 23,1939, Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler sign the Nazi- Soviet pact. In sep 1,1939 the German army invades poland and poland losses. France and Russian decide to fight in the war.

Slavery existed before America had been formed. Slaves were never just laborers, they were also forced to be "concubines, warriors, servants, craftsmen, tutors, and victims of ritual sacrifice."
1)Slavery formed in the United States in "1565 with the first permanent settlement in North America" When Jamestown formed in Virginia in 1619, they also used slaves to tend crops and be servants. Slaves were not just African people, Native Americans and other groups were also forced into slavery.
2)The lesson that was learned from slavery is that people of any race should not be forced to work if they don't want to, and that it is unethical and wrong.
3)We do think that this lesson has been learned, people in our country are not forced to do labor anymore." 1866
14th Amendment to the Constitution defines a citizen as anyone born in the U.S. (except Native Americans) or naturalized, thereby extending all rights of citizenship to African Americans.

1. Many people blame the fall of the roman empire on the introduction of christianity.People also blame the fall on simple defenses against others(such as the barbarians).Another major reason for the fall of the Roman Empire is the huge differences in society, there were differences such as money, the rich litterally had all the money.
2. The lesson learned was that people should be able to keep a city together weather or not a religion is introduced into the city.Religion should not corrupt a whole society because people are all the same just with different views.
3.No we havent learned the lesson. We still use discrimination agaist others for their color or religion today. Many people infact have a hate against others for having different beliefs in different religion that others may not agree with.Discrimination due to age is one of the great tragedies of modern life. "Discrimination due to age is one of the great tragedies of modern lifethe desire work to be useful is what makes life worth living, and to be told your efforts are not needed because you are the wrong age is a crime."
Johnny Ball
We as a group also agree with Johnny Ball and his interpretation of discrimination on the ages.

1."It was the greatest war in American history.
3 million fought - 600,000 died.
It was the only war fought on American soil by Americans. In January 31 the President Lincoln issues General War Order No. 1 calling for all United States naval and land forces to begin a general advance. In May 10 the South suffers a huge blow as Stonewall Jackson dies from his wounds, his last words, "Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees." "I have lost my right arm," Lee laments. In November 15 after destroying Atlanta's warehouses and railroad facilities, Sherman, with 62,000 men begins a March to the Sea. President Lincoln on advice from Grant approved the idea. "I can make Georgia howl!" Sherman boasts. In May remaining Confederate forces surrender. The Nation is reunited as the Civil War ends. Over 620,000 Americans died in the war, with disease killing twice as many as those lost in battle. 50,000 survivors return home as amputees.
2.The lessons that should have been learned are that war doesn't solve anything it just leads to death. Also we should charish life and learn to talk out our problems instead of going to war and killing many people.
3.We have not learned our lesson because we have had many other wars. Also people are still dieing from all the wars we have had like World World 1 and 2, Vietnam, Persian Gulf War.

1. The vietnam war was fough during 1964 and 1975. On one side was the coalition of forces including the United Staes, The repulic of vietnam, Australia, New Zealand and south Korea. On the other side was, The coalition of forces including the democratic repiblic of vietnam. and the National Liberation Front, a communist-led South Vietnamese huerrilla movement.
2. The war was a wast of time beacuse it took the us 25 years to end the war. and lost the lives of 2.5 million people for no reason.
3. We did not learn our lesson because we sent troops over to middle east to fight, and there is no need for this war. There are some people that good and some that are bad. we should only kil the bad people.
1.)"The British Empire was the first genuinely global empire, an empire that ranged, at times, from the American colonies in the West, Australia and New Zealand in the East, Canada and her dominions in the North and huge chunks of Africa in the South, including Egypt and Rhodesia. These huge landmasses, and many other smaller islands and places besides, were to be shaped, controlled, dominated and otherwise brought under the dominion of a nation which, prior to colonial ambitions, was a small and perhaps dull and uninspiring set of countries.www.BritishEmpire.co."
The British empire was probably a modern day ancient Rome. The British empire spread across the world like wildfire. Once the empire was so big sections were being ruled by dictators the empire went south it an economic point of view. Sections across the world that were under british rule were being over thrown. It kept happening which had led up to the most famous war in American history, the Revolutionary war. The 13 original colonies over threw Great Britain to become the United States of America.
2.) When one has so much power and authority over a large mass, it will be hard to be fair and you must show equality.
3.) In America we have learned not from Ancient Rome and how it fell, but how the ancient Greeks lived through a democracy(History class, Mr.Shilling) and to live in a country will freedom and equality.

The Cold War
2. There are manny lessons that we could have learned from the Cold War. The lesson that stands out is; bigger and better is not always the best. Both countries spent a ridiculous amount of money on the weapons. All that mone y could have been used to go twards schools or hospitals. Was it worth it? This is the lesson that should have been learned.
elagrand,dlettieri,thunt per 4
No we did not learn that lesson because we are still fighting wars and spending to much money on them. we should give more money to schools and other things. They keep saying the need more money for the war but we never figure out a way to completely end it. we stil spend alot of money on weapons.

The Civil War
1)The Civil War was the greatest war in the American history. It was the only war that was fought in the United States soil. The civil War was fought in many places. Even in the back yards. From New Mexico to Tennessee to Vermont and Florida. People died struggling for freedom. The war was fought by Americans against Americans. The reason of the war was the nation was divided into half. It was north against south. The North wanted to free the slaves. The South didn’t want to let them be free because it would have cost them a lot of money to their crops of cotton.
2)The lesson we should learned of this war is not to fight against each other. When we fought each other many lives were taken away. We should not be divided because we are one nation.
3)We have learned a valuable lesson of the Civil War. The lesson is that is bad to fight each other. We don’t have a reason to kill each other. Now instead of fighting each other we have meeting. Which we com up with ideas which we help us to solve our problems. Then the people vote the best one.

Our group completely agrees with the groups response. The war was a waste of 25 years. It killed 2.5 million people and that is not acceptable. War is still going on right now, showing that we have yet to learn our lesson. Who knows how many americans will die this time.

Yes we agree that slavery is the wrong way to attend the way of living life and how to be treated. Slavery taught us many things to do and not to do like not being racist and to treat all people equal.
we agree with period 4 comment. We also think that war doesn't solve anything and causes death to innocent people.
I think kaylas group was good writing about WWI. They were very spesific they told everything in detail. They told when it started and when it ended. Also they reason it all started and in what countries it started at. The group also has a piont in saying that it was going to be the last war. But it really is not because their is still wars now.
1.) When Kalya's group dicussed the subject of World War 1 our group we agreed with most of their views on the issue. World war 1 was supposed to be the only world war, but unfortunately there was World War 2.
Events Of The Cold War

The alliance between the United States and the Soviet Union began to fall apart before World War II ended. When the war ended, the Red Army occupied much of Eastern Europe.
The threat of nuclear annihilation restrained the armed forces of both sides from directly confronting each other in battle. The closest call came in 1962, when the Soviet Union secretly placed missiles with nuclear warheads in Cuba, and provoked an American naval quarantine that brought the two superpowers to the brink of war.

bconteras, tengland, ipena, mpelayo p4 were right about the first part exept they left out the veitcon who fought in jungle tunnels.
I completey agree with them on the second part of the assignment.
I dis agree with the third part though. Veitnam was not a threat to us we just didn't want them under communist conrol. The war in Iraq was a dirrect threat to us by suppling uranium to terrorsit and adding al quida in there training camps.
1)Jan 30,1933 adolf hitler becomes chancellor of germany.March 12,1938 the germany Army into Austria. In March 15,1939 the german army invades czechoslaviakia. In August 23rd 1939, Joseph stalin and adolf hitler sign the Nazi-Soviet pact. In september 1, 1939 the german army invades poland and poland loses.France and Russia decides to fight in the war. japan joines germany japan attacks pearl harbor. U.S decides to fight in the war.U.S bombs hit Hiroshima. U.S helps russia defeat germany in 1945. Hitler dissapears nobody knows for a fact what happened to him. Emporer of japan surrenders 1945 war ends.
2)No one should have so much power that turnes thing in a war. In this case hitler made the whole world in to a big war.
3) This really did not teach us a lesson we still are at war. This supposbly was the last war. But it is not we are now in war with Iraq.
