Chapter 2 and 3:
Read each of the following reading questions and respond to each using at least one quote from the book. Each of your responses should be at least 3 sentences in length.

1. Why is Scout so looking forward to starting school?
2. Why does Jem not want anything to do with Scout at school? Is his behaviour typical of an older child?

7. Atticus says that you never really understand a person “until you climb into his skin and walk around in it”. What does this mean? Is it an easy thing for Scout to learn? (In the last chapter of the novel, Scout repeats this, but she changes “skin” to “shoes” - this is probably not a mistake: Harper Lee suggests that Scout cannot clearly recall exactly what Atticus said and when, but the reader can check this!)

Chapter 2
1. After Dill left, Scout was pretty bored, and was excited to be with other kids again.
2. Jem is bigger, and older then Scout, it's classic and ordinary that her little brother is "embarrassing".
3.I think she shouldn't of freaked out when she saw that Scout could read. She should be happy that that is one less student to worry about. She should recognize this as him being a smart kid. She shouldn't think she is all high and mighty just because she has new teaching methods and went to college and such.

1. Calpurnia was a tutor and house keeper for Scout and his family.
2. Walter Cunningham is a simple country boy who's family is very poor. They don't take anything they can't pay back in some way or another. Walter is kind of shy, and a little embarrassed at his family situation.
3. Scout learns how poor Walter really his, but he embarrassed him in class and started to bully him.
4. This means, you can not honestl truely know a persons situation unless you have been in the exact same situation yourself.
5. Burris Ewell has been in the 1st grade repeatedly. He also is without a mother.

Also, whenever she was presented with a conflict, she didn't handle it very well.
4. Calpurnia is the familys house keeper. She is who taught Scout how to read and write. Calpurnia is also Scouts only mother figure.
5. Walter Cunningham is a low class child. Although his family is deep in poverty they dont accept anything theye can't pay back. "He had probably never seen three quarters together at the same time in his life." When he goes to the Finch's house for lunch, he shows a very abnormal taste and Scout points it out.
6."There's some folks who don't eat like us...but you ain't called on to contradict 'em at the table when they don't." Scout learns during the lunch that everyone does things differently, and even though it might seem weird to her, it's not to them.
7. What Atticus meant was that you can't know how that person is completley until you have been in their situations and learned from their experiences.
8. Burris Ewells is one child in a whole family who shows up for the first day of school and are absent the rest of the year. No one seems to care.

6)Scout learns that any person she brings into the house is her company and they should immediately be treated with respect.
7)When Atticus says that you don't really understand a person "until you climb into his skin and walk around in it", he means that you have to look at things from other people's points of view as well as your own. Scout didn't immediately grasp the concept.
8)The Ewells are an exception to most things that go on in Maycomb. Nobody tells them what to do and they are allowed to hunt off season.

2.jem is scout older brother. He hangs around with his little sister at home. when they got to school he told her not to bug him at schhol. this is normal for an older brother.

1. Scout is looking forward to school because during the winter she would see the kids in the school yard playing and she wanted to play with them.
2. Jem doesn’t want anything to do with Scout because they are not in the same grade Scout is way younger then Jem. Yes, it is a behavior of an older child because they are more mature then first graders.
3. I think Caroline Fisher is not a good teacher because she is misunderstanding Scout and she doesn’t let Scout talk for anything. Qualities that she as a teacher doesn’t have are that she listens to her students more then to herself she doesn’t know how to discipline her kids.

4. Calpurnia is this girl that comes from a poor family “the Cunninghams” and she never takes lunch because she can’t afford any. Her household is a tutor and a housekeeper.
5. Walter Cunningham is a very poor but kind boy. His family seems like they are not so kind. His behavior during lunch shows about his home life that he comes from a poor family.
6. Scout sees and understands how Walter is poor but she embarrassed him in class and after tried to bully him but Jem stopped her.
7. I think that it means that you can’t judge someone unless your them or if you know them but other then that it means that you are not to judge someone by the way they are if you haven’t been through what they have or that you don’t have the same problems because no one does.
8. Ewells is an only kid in a big family that only shows up to the first day of school and after that is absent for the rest of the year. He has repeated first grade for two years I think.

1.) Scout wanted to go to school because she seen ikds through her telescope and learned a lot of games. She probably wanted to play the games she learned with her friends. Doing these things would make her feel like a normal kid.
2.) When Jem says he doesn't want to play with her during school, I think it was because he was in the fifth grade and she was in the first. He didn't want to be embarrassed being seen with her. I think he is acting a little bit older than what he really is.
3.) Miss. Caroline seems to be mean and strict, maybe because Scout is a lot smarter than she should be. I think she's an okay teacher except she hits little kids with a ruler which is untolerable these days. Actually, I guess she could be a little more patient with the kids.
Chp. 3
4.) Calpurnia sounds like the maid of the family. She cooks and cleans plus stays home most of the time. Usually a child stays home but occasionly she will get lonely.
5.) Walter is the poorest of them all because he doesn't wear shoes and works a lot during the summer. He can't afford lunch let alone pay back loaners. During lunch when Scout was picking on him he probably a doormat. People can step all over him.
6.) When Walter goes over to Scout's house, of course he's reall hungry because of all the food on his plate. Their parents are also poor because they pay people back with sacks of potatoes. He helps his Dad chop during spring in big open fields.
7.)I think walking in someone's shoes means looking in somebody else's point of perspective. Since Scout is semi-rich she doesn't know what it is like to be Walter. When they talk about being in someone else's skin it means white people had it a lot easier back then than the black folk.
8.)Ewells might be poorer than Walter because he has worms crawling out of his head and he doesn't have any parents. He sure is hard-headed because he told the teacher off which made her cry. You can tell he's a rebel and is a leader not a follower unlike Walter.

Scout was looking forward to start school because Dill left Maycomb. “We saw him off on the five o’clock bus and was miserable without him until it occurred to me that I would be starting to school in a week.” Scout was board without Dill and she missed him a lot. When school would be starting then her mind would be off him.
2.) “Jem was careful to explain that during school hours I was not to bother him.” Jem didn’t was to do anything with scout in school because it would be embarrassing for his sister to tag along. Yes this is typical behavior of an older child.
3.) I think that Miss Caroline is a ok teacher but she picks on Scout a lot. “Miss Caroline began the day by reading us a story about cats.” That good qualities are that she is willing to tech the children but the bad ones are that she quiet doesn’t know how to yet.

4.) Calpurnia is the maid of the Finches. “Jem ran into the kitchen and asked Calpurnia to set an extra plate, we had company.” She is like a mom to Scout and Jem.
5.)“Walter poured syrup on his vegetables and meat with a generous hand” Walter is a poor boy. His parent are farmers and they get along with that they have. His behavior in lunch is that he doesn’t really eat that kind of good food often.
6.) I think that scout doesn’t learn something from the visit by Walter. I think that it is not to judge other people by the way they act or if they are poor or rich. “ Yo’ follks might be better’n the Cunninghams but it don’t count for nothing the way you’re disgracing’ ’em-if you cant act fit to eat at the table you can just set here and eat I the kitchen.” She also learned that it is rude to tell people what you think about them if they are negative comments about them.
7.) I think that this mean that you can really understand somebody unless you have been there and really think about what has happened to them. I don’t think that it is easy for scout to learn this because after all she is a small child that really doesn’t understand something this complicated.
8.) “They were people but acted like animals.” They were disgrace of Maycomb for 3 generations. They were people who only went to school when they wanted education. They were permitted to hunt and trap out of season.

Chapter 2
1.) Scout is looking forward to attending school because she knows she will be ahead in her class. Scout already has the ability to read. She then later finds out some people might not like that.
2.)Jem does not want to be seen with his baby sister walking to school together. It is normal for any boy or girl not wanting to be seen with there younger sibling in public because it makes them feel embarassed.
3.) Scout's teacher is neither good or bad in my opinion. She does have the qualities of being a school teacher, but the way she went about the matter of Scout already knowing how to read was very unreasonable. Just because one of your students is ahead in the class does not mean you are allowed to critisize them.

4.) Ms.Calpurnia was a mother figure towards the kids and had helped around the house by cleaning and cooking for the Finch's home. She would also discipline Jem and Scout if they were to lerk into any trouble.
5.) Walter Cunningham is a nice but money stickened boy. He is the same age as Scout and is the son of a friend of Atticus.
6.) The only probable lesson that Scout had learned was to treat guest politely when they are in your house. She had to be spanked by Calpurnia for her to understand what she must do.
7.)What Atticus means is that she does not know what someone must go through on a daily basis until you actually become that person and go through what they must encounter all the time.
1.) Scout was looking forward to school because she had no real friends besides her brother and Dill. She was lonely in the winter and usually had nothing to do, she wanted to join the kids, especially her brother, during those long lonesome hours that made up her day in the winter.
2.) Jem doesn’t want his reputation to be ruined by his younger sister. He doesn’t want the other kids to know what he is really like at home and knows that Scout would embarrass him somehow. This behavior is typical of an older child.
3.) Miss Caroline Fisher seems to be a fine teacher, but just not cut out for the south. She doesn’t relate to the students and even though it is a long time after the war, there is still tension between the north and the south. Also, she doesn’t understand what these kids are going through, she doesn’t understand the culture.
4.) “Cal” is a black woman who serves as the family’s cook and housekeeper. She acts as one of Scout’s motherly figures.
5.) Walter Cunningham Jr. is a first grader in scout’s family who are very poor, he is not the same age as her though; he has just never passed the first grade because he has to leave school in the spring to help around the farm. Although the Cunningham’s are poor, they would never take something if they could not pay it back. His behavior suggest that he does not get do have much at home.
6.) Scout learns that the Cunningham’s are not all necessarily illiterate and ignorant because of a lack of intelligence, but there is not a system in which they can receive a good education along with making sure they have enough to survive.
8.) Burris Ewell and his family belong to the lowest circle of white Maycomb society. They live off of welfare and Burris is a raging alcoholic. The kids only need to come to school the first day, and then they are overlooked by the town and it is not necessary for them to go. Also, Mr. Ewell is allowed to hunt off season because the town knows that if he doesn’t hunt he won’t feed his children because he spends all his welfare checks on alcohol.
