1.It was very unusual at this time to defend black people because of so much racism.
2.they both have different point of views on christmas. Scout gets excited when she gets her air rifle and gets to spend a week with uncle jack.
3.uncle jack means that scout is growing and following jem's example. All she needs is assistance sometimes.
4.she's a backpoch listener and is always talking about how scout should wear gils' clothing and act more girly.
5. Scout learns that her dad just hopes that they go to him for answers instead of listening to the town's rumors.she later realized that atticus wanted her to hear everything he said that night.
6.Atticus said this because he wanted Scout to know how he felt about them growing up and asking for his advice.
CHAPTER 10
7.she thinks her father is feeble beause she never really sees him doing things the other kids' parents do.She sees this when she was little now that she is growing up she begining to see her point of view change.later on in this chapter she finds out that her father was the "dead shot".
8."Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out to us. Thats why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.
9.Heck Tate does not want to shoot tim johnson"the dog"because he is not really a good aim. He tells Atticus to shoot for him.Tate:"For god's sake,Mr. Finch, look where he is!Miss and you'll go straight into the Radley house!I can't shoot that well and you know it!"
10."didn't you know your daddy's-" he was abot to tell him that his dad was like the best at shooting/aiming.atticus didn't want jem to know this for some reason.
11.jem thinks that they shouldn't say anything because his father wants to keep this from everybody else. Scout gets excited and wants everyone to know that her dad is great at shooting"the dead shot".they want to do the total opposite from each other in this situation.I would do what Scout is suggesting because everyone in her school sees her dad as a "nigger lover" and she wants them to know that he's not just a "nigger lover".

PERIOD 1
Chapter 9
1. He feels that if he doesn’t defend this man he wouldn’t be able to hold his head up in own. Or better yet represent this county in the legislature. He wouldn’t even be able to tell Jem or Scout to do anything. It’s very unusual for white lawyers to their their best for black clients in Alabama because in this time black people are bad and nobody takes them seriously.
2. These feelings are that Jem likes going to his aunt Alexandra’s house because he gets to be with the older people. Scout doesn’t like going to her aunt’s house because she has to play with her cousin Francis.
3. He means that she is getting older. He also says that Scout looks more like Atticus than her mother. He says this because she is using bad language.
4. That she doesn’t like the fact that Atticus is a lawyer for Negroes. Also because Atticus doesn’t know how to discipline his kids.
5. Scout learns that that there is going to be some hard times. Jem will be able to handle it but Scout wouldn’t be able to keep her head. So I think she’s going to try.
6.This means that she never thought Atticus was saying this because he actually wanted Scout to hear it and she didn’t understand until she got older. This is important in the story because we will read on and see what happens when Atticus defends the Negro.

Chapter 10
7. I think this is Scouts view as she tells the story because there growing up and Atticus is obviously getting older. She doesn’t think her dad is feeble after he shoots the dog.
8. He gives the fact that mockingbirds don’t do anything but make music for them to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s garden, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do anything but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.
9. Because Heck has a better chance of missing then Atticus.
10. Heck might have said that Atticus use to be the best shooter in Maycomb city. Atticus might have not wanted him to say it because he doesn’t want Jem to do the same thing Atticus did.
11. The difference is that Jem can handle it and Scout cant at school Scout gets tormented more then Jem and Jem can ignore it but Scout cant. The view that is closer to mine is Jem’s because I would just ignore the kids too.

Chapter 11
12. He said she’s an old lady and you should keep your head up high and be a gentleman.

10. He stopped him because he did not want his son to see him as a real good shooter.
11. Jem wants to help atticus keep everything quiet about his shoting skills. Scout gets excited and wants to tell everyone.
12. Atticus tells him to keep his head high. He says not to let her bother him.
13. SHe said that she did not like the way atticus lets his kids run wild. She thinks he is not watchful of his kids.

T.Cosner p.4
Chapter 9
1. How well does Atticus feel he should defend Tom Robinson? Is it usual for (white) lawyers to do their best for black clients in Alabama at this time?
He feels ok having to defend Tom Robinson because he feels everyone is equal. And if he didn't defend him then he would feel badly because then he wouldn't be able to feel like he does now. No it si not normal for white lawyers to do the best because they are not the same race so if someone defened him then all of the whit folk would hink that they like the black better.
2. Scout and Jem have “mixed feelings” about Christmas? What are these feelings and why?
Scout and jem have mixed feelings about Christmas because they have to go up to the Finches Landing and see there family, Aunt Alexandria, Uncle Jack, and Francis. Also because they treat them different and say that their father doesn't raise them well and let yhem run wild.
3. Uncle Jack Finch tells Scout that she is growing out of her pants. What does this mean and why might he say it?
Uncle Jack says Scout is growing out of her pants it means that she is growing up and she needs to learn to act her age and not cat like a little kid and be mature.
4. When Francis talks to Scout he reveals an unpleasant feature of Aunt Alexandra. What is this?
How she always listens to Francis no matter what he says. She will believe him over anyone.
5. Does Scout learn anything from overhearing Atticus's conversation with Uncle Jack? What might this be?
She learns that Uncle Jack does keep his promise and does't tell Atticus. When she is listening to the conversation she waits to hear if he says it but he doesn't. So she learns to trust her Uncle Jack.
6. Read the final sentence of this chapter. Explain in your own words what it means and why it might be important in the story.
I think it means that he wants her to hear what he is saying because there is going to be a lot of hard ship to come along. Even though some has already came it will get worse.
Chapter 10
7. Scout says that “Atticus was feeble”. Do you think that this is her view as she tells the story or her view when she was younger? Does she still think this after the events recorded in this chapter?
I think she means he is feeble when she was still young because she didn't know what he could do until later on in the chapter. No she still doesn't think that because she wants to go to school and tell everybody what he does. But Jem says no because he says if Atticus wanted to tell us then they would have already known.
8. In this chapter Atticus tells his children that “it's a sin to kill a mockingbird”. What reason does he give for saying this?
Well they ask Miss Maudie and she says it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because all they do is give us music to enjoy and. They don't do anything but sing there hearts out for us.
9. Why does Heck Tate not want to shoot Tim Johnson?
Mr. Tate doesn't want to shoot Tim Jonhson because if he misses the bullet will go right into the Radleys House. So he tells Atticus to shoot him because he is a better shoot then him anyways.
10. Near the end of this chapter Atticus cuts off Heck Tate as he is speaking to Jem. What might Heck have been about to say, and why would Atticus want to stop him from saying it?
I think he was about to say that he didn't know that his daddy is the best shot in Maycomb County. He probably doesn't want him to know because he doesn't want them to go around bragging to other children and tell them that he is the best shot because it will just make conflicts.
11. Jem and Scout have different views about telling people at school how well Atticus can shoot. Explain this difference. Which view is closer to your own?
Scout wants to go tell everyone at school because she thinks it is cool and wants everyone to know. But jem doesn't want to tell because he says if he would have wanted us to know he would have told us and not just let us find out on our own. Mine is closer to Scouts because if my dad does something kool i want to bragg to my friends about it and tell them how cool it is.
Chapter 11
12. How does Atticus advise Jem to react to Mrs. Dubose's taunts?
Just keep your head up and act like a gentlemen.
13. What does Mrs. Dubose say about the children's mother? How does Jem feel about this?
Mrs. Dubose say that she was wonderful and that it is a shame that her children run aound wild because Atticus Doesn't know how to keep a handle on them. jem feels mad because he tinks Atticus does a good job at raising us and Calpurnia is there to help to.
14. What request does Mrs. Dubose make of Jem? Is this a fair punishment for his “crime”?
To go and read to Mrs. Dubose everday after school and on Saturdays for two hours for a month. Yes because he killed all of her flowers that she has worked so hard on.
15. Explain in your own words what Atticus thinks of insults like “nigger-lover”. Do you agree with him (Explain your answer)?
16. Why, in Atticus's view, was Mrs. Dubose “a great lady”?
Atticus says that Mrs. Dubose is a model of real courage rather than “a man with a gun in his hand”. What does he mean? Do you think he is right?
She was a great aldy because she had courage and spoke her mind and tried to stay off the morphine before she died. He means that she is trying to stay away from the morphine because she is a morphine addict and that is ahrder than having a man standing around with a gun in his hand. yes he is right because he she has to go through it everday of her life.
17. Chapters ten and eleven are the last two chapters in the first part of the book. Explain why Harper Lee chooses to end the first part here.
I think she choose to end it there because Mrs. Dubose had died and Jem was changing ages. So it meant that it should be a new part of the book.
Chapter 12
18. What new things does Scout learn here about how the black people live?
They go to church but it is very different from the white folk church. Also that when Cal is around the Finches she talks like them but when she is around black folks she talks like black peolpe. Cal says that is would be rude to talk like white folk around balsck folks because it makes them feel dumb.
19. What does Scout learn from Calpurnia's account of Zeebo's education?
That Calpurnia tought him how to read from the same book she learned how to read from. That Scouts Granddaddy had given it to her. Miss Buford had thought her how to read.
20. Explain why Calpurnia speaks differently in the Finch household, and among her neighbours at church.
She talks differnt because if she talked like the white folk did around her neighbors that it would be rude because not a lot of them could talk that way so it would make them sound uneducated.

14. The request that Mrs. Dubose does is that Jem has to go read to her everyday for two hours for a month. I don't think what Jem was right. He killed all of her flowers that she has worked so hard on but also i don't think what Mrs. Dubose said to Jem was right.

15. Atticus thinks that its rude for people calling him like that but he doesn't really take that as a big deal.

16. I think that Atticus says that because he is a genltman and really like Mrs. Dubose even if Mrs. Dubose says all thoes rude things about him.

17. I think that Harper Lee chooses to end the two chapters here beacuse Mrs. Dubose dead and Jem and Scout were getting older so he made it seemed that years pass by and Jem and Scout were a little older.

2. Jem likes Christmas because he gets to go and hang out with his older cousins and be at the landing while Scout does not like her family there.
