Mango Street-"“Louie, His Cousin & His Other Cousin”

The House on Mango Street
Journal Guide for Chapter Ten
“Louie, His Cousin & His Other Cousin”

Answer the following questions in complete sentences.

Questions
1. Where does Louie live?
2. Who are his cousins?
3. Why were people so interested in the yellow Cadillac?
4. Where does Louie’s cousin get the Cadillac?
5. What happened to Louie’s cousin?

Themes
1. A major theme of the novel is continued in this chapter. The idea that people can find happiness in their day or in their difficult existence is shown in the major event in this chapter. What event? What does this show about the people of Mango Street?
2. Why doesn’t Esperanza focus on the theft as she tells the story? Why does she focus more on the car and the ride than on the fact that the cousin committed a crime?

Style
Cisneros has a poetic style. She incorporates both vivid imagery and spare prose. She uses both to create a picture of the narrator’s world.

1. What words does the narrator use to describe the cousins? How do these words create a vivid picture of the cousins?
2. How did Esperanza describe the car?
3. What lines in this chapter create the sense of joy that the narrator feels?

Personal Response
Part of Esperanza’s personal philosophy seems to be to take every day as it comes, finding happiness where she can. What is your personal philosophy?

Questions:
1.Louie lives downstairs in Meme’s basement apartment.
2.Her cousins’ names are Marin and the other one they do not mention his name, but he has a Cadillac that I think is stolen and he gets pulled over by the cops.
3.They were so interested in the yellow Cadillac because it had whitewalls and a yellow scarf tied around the mirror. It was a car that they never seen before.
4.The book doesn’t say were he got the Cadillac, but I believe that he stole it.
5.Louie’s cousin gets pulled over by the cops, but he doesn’t pull over. On his chase he runs into a wall and crashes the car. He then gets arrested.

Themes:
1.When Louie’s cousin shows up with his yellow Cadillac everyone is surprised and all exited to see the car. They have never seen anything like it. This shows that the people on Mango Street are interested in watching action happen.
2.Esperanza focused on the car more than the theft because on her street a lot of people probably get pulled over, but she rarely sees cars that looks like Louie’s cousins.

Style:
1.The narrator says they have only seen her other cousin once, but it was “very important.”
2.She described they car in great detail. She explained the inside and outside of the car. She even said little details that you may not even notice.
3.”We each had to sit with one of Louis’s little sisters on our lap, but that was okay.” This sentence creates the sense of joy that the narrator feels.

Personal Response:
I believe that you only live once, enjoy everyday, as it is your last.

1.Louie lives downstairs in Meme’s basement apartment.

2.Her cousins’ names are Marin and the other one they dont mention his name, but he has a yellow Cadillac.

3.They were so interested in the yellow Cadillac because it had whitewalls and a yellow scarf tied around the mirror. It was a car that they never seen before.Especially being in the "poor side" of town seeing something like that was amazing to them.

4.The book doesn't really say where Louie got it. But most likely he stole it.

5.Louie’s cousin gets pulled over by the cops but he doesn’t pull over. On his chase he runs into a wall and crashes the car and gets aressted.

Themes:
1.When Louie’s cousin shows up with his yellow Cadillac everyone is surprised and all exited to see the car. They have never seen anything like it. This shows that the people on Mango Street don't really see much expensive things.

2.Esperanza focused on the car more than the theft because on her street a lot of people probably get pulled over or in trouble with the cops. But she probly never really gets to see such nice expensive things as this car.

Style:
1.The narrator says they have only seen her other cousin once, but it was “very important". This shows they must not see a lot of there cousins.

2.She described they car in great detail. She explained the inside and outside of the car. She even said little details that you may not even notice. This shows how little they get to see or even get use of with nice things.

3.”We each had to sit with one of Louis’s little sisters on our lap, but that was okay.” This makes you feel like everyone was so happy and overjoyed with the car.

Personal Response:
My personal philosophy is basically live life to the fullest your never going to know whats going to happen to you the next day.

1. In Meme's basement.

2. Marin or as Esperanza thinks also, Maris.

3. Because it was comfortable.

4. It was stolen by Louie's cousin.

5. He got arrested.

Themes:

1. When Louis shows up in a Yellow Cadillac. This shows that the people of Mango Street don't have too much good or new things happen to them.

2. Because she really didn't care. Because it was something new in the usual life of someone who lives on Mango Street.

Style:

1. "Her name is Marin or Maris or something like that, and she wears dark nylons all the time and lots of free makeup she gets free from selling Avon." "and except for a bloody lip and a bruised forehead, Louie's cousin was okay." It shows that his two cousins are obviously very different in more than gender. Marin doesn't seem to get in trouble and Louie's cousin probally gets in a lot of trouble.

2. She described it like this, "Great big yellow Cadillac with whitewalls and a yellow scarf tied around the mirror."

3. "Everybody looked inside the car and asked where he got it. There were white rugs and white leather seats. We all asked for a ride and asked where he got it. The seats were big and soft like a sofa."

Personal Response:

1. My personal philosophy changes all the time. For a while, one philosophy will work and it'll get me pretty far but after a while, it doesn't really work anymore. Therefore, I wouldn't say I have a personal philosophy.
