Mango Street-"Those Who Don't"

The House on Mango Street
Journal Guide for Chapter Twelve
“Those Who Don’t”

Answer the following questions in complete sentences.

Questions
1. How do outsiders view Esperanza’s neighborhood?
2. How do the people who live in Esperanza’s neighborhood view it?
3. How does Esperanza feel when she drives “into a neighborhood of another color?”

Quotes
Explain the significance of the following quotes.
1. All brown all around, we are safe.
2. But watch us drive into a neighborhood of another color and our knees go shakity-shake and our car windows get rolled up tight and our eyes look straight. Yeah. That is how it goes and goes.

Themes
This chapter is a type of social commentary. Esperanza points out several things that reinforce prejudices and segregation. What does she point out? What does she say will make the fear go away?

Style
Cisneros has a poetic style. She incorporates both vivid imagery and spare prose. She uses both to create a picture of the narrator’s world.

1. What words does the narrator use to describe the trip into another neighborhood? How does this imagery reinforce the idea of segregation?
2. Esperanza points out both sides of the social separation issue. What words does she use to show both sides?
3. What lines in this chapter create the sense of separation that the narrator feels? Does she believe that this will change?

Personal ResponseWhat do you believe will make the separations in our society change? Aside from racial segregation, what other factors separate people? Will this change?

3.When she talks about different colors/race and stating that they are afraid to enter each other’s neighborhoods, creates a sense of separation. She doesn’t think this will change.

Personal Response:
1.A lot of separation in the world is based on wealth. People are separated in money wise. The wealthy live with the wealthy, the poor with the poor, and everything in-between. I doubt that this will change, unless everyone earns the same amount of money, but even if they earn the same amount of money wont change this. People spend their money differently. Some people save their money and others don’t.

Questions
1.Outsides view Esperanza's neighborhood as a danger zone full of bad and scary people.
2.The people in the neighborhood know eachother and know that no one is dangerous or would do harm to others.
3.Esperanza feels anxiety and intimidation when in the presence of a different racial neighborhood.

Quotes
Explain the significance of the following quotes.
1.Esperanza notes how comfortable and relaxed the same race is around eachother.
2. Esperanza recognizes how each race does the same thing when in the presence of another.

Themes
Esperanza points out how each race might feel timid when outnumbered by another, and she doesn't seem optimistic in that fear ever going away.

Style
Cisneros has a poetic style. She incorporates both vivid imagery and spare prose. She uses both to create a picture of the narrator’s world.

1.The words that Esperanza uses to describe going into another neighborhood express fear and the need to try to go unnoticed. It's an obvious segregation if thats how different races react to eachother.
2.Esperanza parrallels each side to the other to show that everyone acts and reacts the same.
3."Yeah. That is how it goes and goes." This is a very pessimistic way showing that she doesn't believe things will change.

Personal Response
When everyone can let their guard down and really try to understand one another and just relax and not have to worry about offending someone if those weren't the initial intentions, then we all might be able to get along. I could see this happening if a certain something was made okay for people to use.

1. Outsiders view Esperanza's neighborhood as a scary place.

2. They view the neighborhood as nothing scary because everyone knows each other.

3. She gets nervous when she drives "into a neighborhood of another color".

Quotes:

1. It shows that since everyone has the same color of skin, there is more security.

2. Because it's a new type of race that they are experiencing.

Themes:

1. "But watch us drive into a neighborhood of another color and our knees go shakity-shake and our car windows get rolloed up tight and our eyes go straight." It reinforces the idea of segregation by showing that Esperanza and her family get nervous when they see people with different colored skin than brown skin of which is their own.

2. "Those who don't know any better come into our neighborhood scared. They think we're dangerous." "But we aren't afraid."

3. All of the last paragraph in this chapter shows what sense of seperation that Esperanza feels. She just thinks that it just happens and has no real evidence saying that she thinks that the sense of separation will change or not.

Personal Response:

1. I do not believe that anything will make the separations in our society change because of so many people who go by the idea of which the world is only good for themselves and they only have so much time. Other than racial separation, there is financial separation, gender separation, age separation and much more. If the people who were the main culprits in creating separation in our society listened to the people who actually cared more about the life of the world and the people who live on it, the separation in our society COULD change at one time.

1.“But watch us drive into a neighborhood of another color and our knees go shakity-shake and our car windows get rolled up tight and our eyes look straight. Yeah. That is how it goes and goes.”
2.“but watch us drive into a neighborhood of another color.."
3."Thats how it is and thats how it goes".
Personal response:
1. what separates people in our society are the different levels of classes. There are always going to be people richer than others. I don’t think this will change because there always going to be people that are not going to accepted others just the way there are.
