Mango Street-“Geraldo No Last Name”

The House on Mango Street
Journal Guide for Chapter Twenty-Five
“Geraldo No Last Name”

Answer the following questions in complete sentences.

Questions
1. Where did Marin meet Geraldo?
2. Why doesn’t Geraldo have a last name?
3. Why does Geraldo die? What clues let you believe that his death was not inevitable?

Quotes
Explain the significance of the following quotes.

Only Marin can’t explain why it mattered, the hours and hours, for somebody she didn’t even know.

His name was Geraldo. And his home was in another country. The ones he left behind are far away, will wonder, shrug, remember.

Themes
This chapter is another social criticism. The repetition of the questions reinforce the idea that Geraldo didn’t matter to the society in which he lived. What were the questions? How did the questioning of the police imply that Geraldo brought the accident on himself?

What actions and lines support Marin’s belief that Geraldo could have been saved?

Why does Esperanza talk about Geraldo’s home?

Style
Cisneros has a poetic style. She incorporates both vivid imagery and spare prose. She uses both to create a picture of the narrator’s world.

1. What role does the repetition in this chapter play in the development of the theme?
2. How does Esperanza’s talk about Geraldo’s home connect the theme of home that carries throughout the novel?

Personal Response
This chapter is a social commentary. Are there still people in society that are treated the way that Geraldo was treated? If so, what should be done about it? Can anything be done?

4. They will have a black-and-white photo taken in front of the tomb shaped like spears in a white vase because this is how they send the deadaway in tat country.

GERALDO NO LAST NAME
PERIOD 1

Questions
1. Marin met Geraldo at a dance.
2. Geraldo more than likely does have a last name, all he told Marin was his first name.
3. Geraldo was killed by a hit and run driver. It wasn't the hit and run that made it inevitable, it was when he got to the hospital and nobody was willing to help him survive.

Quotes

1. Marin didn't know why she went with him to the hospital. She didn't even know him. She felt like it was the right thing to do.
2. He was a immigrant, or just a guy who left his home to find something better just like everyone else in this book. He might of left home because know one cared about him, and he wasn't being taken care of.

Themes

The questions of the police were some what along the lines of where she met him and if she knew anything about him. He had no full name, no wallet, no address. To the police and the hospital Geraldo was a nobody, maybe that means he walked out of no where infront of the car. Making it seem like he didn't know any better.
2. " Nobody but an intern working all alone. And maybe if the surgeon would've come, maybe if he hadn't lost so much blood, if the surgeon had only come..."
3. Esperanza understands why he left his home. She understood that nobody cared about him enough to save his life.

Style
1. Repetition re-enforces ideas and things that are important.
2. The theme of home, and finding a home is expressed in Geraldo. He was a nobody to a lot of people. All he wanted to do was make a place for himself.

Personal Response
There are plenty of people in society that are thought of a treated like Geraldo. I don't think anything can be done. There is always going to be hate, no amount of education can change that. Kids learn from their parents, and it just goes on from there. You just have to not be so blinded by what people tell you.

Colin Nichols Period 4

--Questions--
1. Marin met Geraldo at the dance.
2. When Marin met Geraldo he only told her his first name, then he died so she never saw him again.
3. Geraldo is killed in a hit and run. Marin says he might have been saved if the surgeons came, or if he didn't lose so much blood.
--Quotes--
4.
5. The significance is that the family and friends he left behind may never learn of his death, they will remember him but they will never know that he died.
--Themes--
6. The questions the police ask Marin are "What was she doing at the dance, who was she, and what was she doing out with someone like him at 3 AM?". They implyed he brought it on himself because he was nobody, just asking for it, just another guy that didn't speak english. Some lines that support Marin's belief are "And maybe if the surgeon would have come...".
7. She talks about his home because the people he left behind may never know that he died.
--Style--
8. The role repitition plays is to enforce the theme of social criticism. The things repeated reinforce the fact that Geraldo wasn't anyone important.
9. It connects the theme because when Esperanza talks about peoples home its generally a sadder tone, usually about lonely people who long to be back where they came from, with the people they love.
--Personal Response--
10. There are still people today that are treated the way Geraldo was treated, although I don't think much can be done about it, there will always be racism and racist people, racist people cause chaos, and chaos is a key element in human nature that will never be settled.

Questions
1. Marin met Geraldo at a dance.
2. Geraldo has no last name because Marin never found it out.
3. Geraldo dies in a hit and run accident which could have been avoided if maybe he looked both ways before crossing.

Quotes
Marin is upset over Geraldos death but no one sees why because she had just met him and he shouldn't have mattered that much to her accoring to the people of Mango street.

Geraldo was a foreigner and his family will probably never find out that he died or how because he didn't know anyone in his new surroundings.

Themes
The questions were "and what does it matter?" The police didn't seem to care because of where he came from.

"If only the surgeon had come, if only he hadn't have lost so much blood" imply that he could have been saved if people had been willing to help him.

Esperanza talks about Geraldos home as a sign of respect and proper mourning that no one else seemed to show.

Style
1. The repetition in this chapter represents the confusion that Esperanza feels when Geraldo was no cared for.
2. The hoplessness that flows throughout the novel is shown in this chapter when Esperanza talks about how Geraldo was not saved.

Personal Response
What happend to Geraldo still happens today but until true equality is enforced in society and people change I don't think anything will improve on the situation

Questions:
1.Marin meets Gerardo at a dance.
2.He does have a last name; he just didn't have an identification card on him or tell Marin his last name.
3.He died by a hit and run. The clues that let me believe that his death was not inevitable is they didn't have any phone number or know who to notify about his injury and if they can give him medical procedures.

Quotes:
1.Marin didn’t know why she stayed there with him for that long without even knowing him.
2.He wasn't from that country. His family will never know what happened to him and they will wonder and remember.

Themes:
1."His home was in another country.” "No address, no name. Nothing in his pockets. Ain't it a shame."
2."And maybe if the surgeon would've come, maybe if he hadn't lost so much blood, if the surgeon had only come..." This line shows that if there was a surgeon at the hospital he might of, just might of survived.
3.She takes about his home because she probably wonders how his family is going to feel not knowing where their father/husband/friend is.

Style:
1.It shows that Marin is a caring person and was worried about this man, even though she didn't really know him that well.
2.She feels that her home is far away.

Personal response:
1.Yes, people are still treated like this. I personally think it is very wrong. People should treat other people with all the respect. Like all parents try to teach their kids "Treat others how you want to be treated" I’m sure if you were put in the position, as Gerardo was you would defiantly want someone to be there for you and try to save you.
