I was about 12 going on 13 when I realized I SHOULD leave my childhood behind. To this day I still love playing in parks, jumping in jump houses, watching cartoons, and just being a goof ball. In a lot of ways I hate that I am growing up. I don't want a whole bunch of responsibilities. I don't want to be held back by them either, I just want to play and have fun for the rest of my life. Growing up has its good points too. The things you experience while growing up are unforgettable.

Questions
1. The girls are jumping rope while talking about hips.
2. The girls talk about how hips are good for dancing and holding babies, but Nenny thinks that if you don’t get them you will turn into a man.
3. The comments lead one to believe the girls are probably pre-teens because they haven’t experienced getting their hips yet.

Quotes
Explain the significance of the following quotes.

The narrator is saying that one day you are a kid and the next thing you know you have grown up and are ready to find out new things.

Esperanza is talking about how Nenny is still in that fantasy childlike state of mind that she and Rachel and Lucy have long grown out of.

Themes
The girls mention women being waitresses and mothers which makes it seem like they view women that can only amount to certain places.

Style
1. Esperanza talks about hips as cradles and flowers blooming.
2. Flowers inevitably bloom and the narrator connects that with the inevitability of growing up.
3. Nenny doesn’t join in because she has no idea of hips or their importance, and the girls rhymes show that they are creative and have different ideas of what growing up is like.

Personal Response
I think I went through that these past two years but at the same time I don’t really have any adult responsibilities so I don’t think I’m quite past that yet. Growing up to me has just been seeing both sides of being an adult, like on one side there is all the fun and freedom but then the other side is having to support yourself and then there is the whole idea of life in general and the point of going through everything knowing that you aren’t going to be around forever and how that affects how you live your life…its all very overwhelming.

2. The girls say that hips are good for holding babies while you cook. Nenny says if you don't have hips, you are a man.

3. The comments give a feeling that says that the girls are still immature although they do know a few things about life that are true.

Quotes:

1. You decide where you go in the future.

2. The person is in her own world and cares about herself only?

Themes: The roles the girls mention are the usual stereotypical woman roles. Their comments obviously then show that they are immature in the section of knowing that women are not just people that gives birth and the usual sterotype.

Style:

1. She says that they bloom like roses.

2. That they will bloom no matter what?

3. Nenny doesn't join in the language game that the others are playing because as Esperanza is saying "she is in a world we don't belong to anymore.". The rhymes show that they are eccentric and a bit immature at the least.

Personal:

I felt like I left my childhood back when I was about.. Ten or Eleven. Even though that is not the usual age that you realize that you are older, it was this way for me. Growing up was good and bad. Good was really good and bad likewise.
