Questions:
Esperanza wanted to eat in the canteen, because many of the other kids do.

Esperanza convinces her mother to let her eat at the canteen by persisting and saying if she ate at the canteen, her mother would have fewer dishes to do.

Esperanza said it was her house, even though it wasn’t because she was nervous, and scared of the nun.

Esperanza experienced racial profiling on a smaller scale. While she was in the canteen, she ended up sitting alone and keeping to herself.

Themes:
The humiliating experience Esperanza endures with the nun is similar to the experience in chapter one, because in both cases, she was ashamed of her home.

Esperanza's experience at the canteen taught her that there will always be negativity directed towards people of other races, but you can learn to overcome it.

Style:
The words of choice to described Esperanza's experience with the nun gave a feeling of fright. Esperanza was nervous and ashamed of whom she was.

Personal Response:
Adults are portrayed as naive and unknowing of the impact that they have on children's lives. They don't seem to understand what others are going through. When I was a child, I saw adults as rude, they didn't seem to care about how you felt, what you thought, and what you had to say.

I.
1)Esperanza wants to eat in the canteen because all the other kids eat there and she wants to be like them.
2)Esperanza says that she will make her own lunch and gives her reasons like making things easier around the house.
3)Esperanza pointed out the raggedy house and said it was hers so the nun would let her eat in the canteen.
4)Esperanza’s mother didn’t have any lunch meats so Esperanza put rice in the sandwich and she was crying because of the nun so all the kids watched her cry and eat a rice sandwich.
II.
1)Both of the experiences involved her home and where she lived. She lied about her house so the nun would let her eat in the canteen.
2)Esperanza learned that the canteen wasn’t what she expected. It wasn’t as special as she thought.
III.
1)The narrator uses words like yelling, crying, and pointing to describe her experience with the nun.
2)The title is The Rice Sandwich because that’s one of the elements that made the chapter. Her sandwich being a rice sandwich shows that no matter how hard she tries to be like the other kids, she’s always going to be different.
IV.
1)This chapter portrays adults as condescending, mean people that don’t listen to children or don’t want to hear their reasoning. I looked at adults as teachers of life lessons and as guides to how to live life.

Themes:
1.It is like the embarrasment in chapter one because she is embarrased of her house.
2.She learned that it is easier to tell the truth than to lie.
Style:
1.She says Esperanza starts to cry it shows Esperanza is scared to admit where her house is, I think esperanza is tired of being ashamed.

Personal Response:
1.They are protrayed as mean and scary I used to think adults were mean and scary too.
